Some festivals like Deepavali are more than mere religious and cultural observances. They transcend physical boundaries and ideological differences. The obvious metaphor in the light and shadow play is unmistakable, with darkness doubling for ignorance, and light denoting knowledge and the transition from one to the other, the process of educating oneself. Various expressions that center around the concept of moving 'from darkness into light' signify the same in almost all the cultures, and thereby the celebration of variations of Deepavali can be found in the Greeks, Roman, Chinese and many such ancient civilizations. What nature puts on a show every day and night, and in the eclipses, in the waxing and the waning of the moon, driving home that concept seasonally, man allocates a day once in an year, to remind himself of the true spirit of the festival.
